Addition and subtraction practice for 6 and 7 year olds

Before times tables come the facts every other calculation sits on: what makes 10, what doubles are, and why 9 − 4 is the same question as 4 + ? = 9.

What to practise at six

  • Bonds to 10. 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6, 5 + 5 — and the subtractions that go with them. These are the base of every later sum.
  • Doubles and near doubles. 6 + 6 = 12, so 6 + 7 is one more. Most children find doubles easy and near doubles unlock a lot of facts.
  • Counting on from the bigger number. For 3 + 8, start at 8. Small habit, big speed gain.
  • Subtraction as difference. 9 − 4: how far from 4 to 9? Turning subtraction into "what do I add" removes most of the fear.

How practice should feel at this age

Short and mostly successful. A six-year-old's attention is a few minutes long and a wrong answer is felt more than at nine. Four-choice questions with an instant green tick are ideal: the child sees the right answer on screen, chooses it, and gets the feedback before doubt sets in. Typed answers can wait until seven or eight.

In Kalko

Addition and subtraction each have Practice rounds at three levels and their own Challenge ladder. For a six-year-old, start with Practice.

  1. Practice → Easy → Addition. Five questions, four choices, green tick on the right answer. One round a day.
  2. Then Subtraction, still Easy. Same format; the questions use the same numbers as the addition facts, so the connection is visible.
  3. Medium after two weeks of 5/5. Larger numbers, still with choices.
  4. Challenge at seven or eight. The Addition and Subtraction challenges use a number pad. Level 1 is gentle; three stars unlocks the next.

Haptic feedback (a small buzz on right and wrong answers) can be switched off in Settings if a child finds it distracting.

Tips

  • Say the bond out loud as a pair: "3 and 7 make 10, 7 and 3 make 10".
  • Keep rounds to five. Stopping before boredom is what makes tomorrow's round happen.
  • Let the child hold the phone. Ownership of the streak matters more than the maths in the first month.

Questions parents ask

Is Kalko suitable for a 6 year old?

Yes, on Practice → Easy for addition and subtraction. Multiplication and division can wait; the Learn and Challenge modes are there when the child is ready.

Should a 6 year old use their fingers?

Fingers are fine as a bridge. The goal over the year is to need them less, which happens naturally as bonds and doubles become known facts.
